Q: My fiance and I have what we think is a really cool idea for the design of our wedding invitations but we are worried that our guests wont think they look nice or will wonder why they look the way they do. Should we go with what we want or go with something more like what we think people will expect?
A: Usually couples that opt to go with a custom designed wedding invitation do so because of the details of their wedding that make it special and unique. They either can’t find a pre-made design out of a catalog or online, or they have some unique ideas of their own that they want a professional designer to help them bring to life. If your ideas for your invitation reflect what you are planning for your wedding then you should go with your ideas. Your wedding is your day. If you are planning your wedding based on the things that you and your fiance love and reflect who you are as a couple, then I think the answer is obvious. Of course, you don’t want your invitations to be offensive to your family or friends or be confusing in any way. You don’t want to send a really casual invitation if your wedding is going to be black tie for example.
Update: The sky is the limit. We are seeing so many truly amazing wedding invitation designs out there. I can say that sometimes I am jealous that we haven’t done anything for a client that is completely unique. Some couples print onto vintage handkerchiefs, others stamp real wood veneer. I have seen save the dates printed on balloons and kites. If you have an idea that tells your unique love story, go for it!!! Remember that often times, the more custom you go, the price tag can go up but don’t be afraid to create the invitation you want. Your wedding is your day and if you aren’t planning a traditional event, don’t feel like you can’t make your invites match your day!
