Why Your Wedding Invitations Should be an Important Part of the Wedding Planning Process
Planning your wedding, especially if you don’t have a planner, can be time consuming. Chances are you work full time and want to maintain at least a semi normal life. That means the time you have to devote to your wedding planning is limited. Even if you’ve hired a wedding planner, coordinator or have family and friends helping out, there are still so many decisions to be made and so much to do especially as the day draws near.
Here at Raspberry Creative I’m only playing a small role in the overall wedding but I’ve seen far too many couples plan the most beautiful wedding with every detail carefully thought out. Beautiful colors, decorations, a perfect venue, flowers, attire and so on only to skimp on the stationery as if it was that thing they knew they had to do but didn’t want to spend time or money on.
I get it, we don’t all prioritize the same way and not everyone wants to put a significant portion of their budget into their invitations and other stationery. I hear the same reasons over and over again about stationery only being paper or that they just end up in the trash anyway for reasons why couples want to go the cheapest route possible. Maybe that’s all true, but what happens to all the flowers, monogrammed napkins, bar signs, etc.? Doesn’t much of that just end up in the trash too? If you’ve put so much time and effort into planning your perfect day, wouldn’t you want your invitations to be a work of art that people will want to hang on to as a keepsake of this special time in your life?
Make an Impression
Your wedding invitations are the first impression your guests will have of your wedding day. Your invitation clues them in to the style, colors and formality of the day you are having. From the invitation, they know how to appropriately dress and what to expect of your day. They know if they need to make travel arrangements or maybe what meal they will be having. Let’s face it, your wedding day is your day, but it’s really about the guest experience or why would you go to all the trouble anyway?
Invitations are Tangible
Another reason why your invitations are important is because they are one of the only tangible pieces you will be able to keep and cherish for years to come. Most tuxedos are rented. Real flowers, unless you preserve all of them, will wilt and die and be tossed away. The food will be gone, the venue rented to someone else. Your gown may be preserved but you likely wont have it kept on display somewhere. Your invitation, if selected to perfectly represent your day, can be framed or put in an album to enjoy for years to come and it will always remind you of that special moment in your life where your family began.
Traditionally wedding stationery is estimated as being 10% of the total budget for the wedding. Wedding stationery includes save the dates, the invitations, programs, thank you cards and anything else you would be personalizing for your day. That means if you are planning a wedding with an overall budget of $10,000, you should expect to spend somewhere around $1000 of that overall budget on your stationery. Plan accordingly and be open with your stationer so that they can offer you packages and options that will fit within your budget.
Unlike most other wedding vendors, when it comes to custom wedding stationery, the packages and pricing aren’t always spelled out like a package from a DJ, Venue or Caterer. Unlike going to a caterer and selecting from three main packages, custom stationery packages have so many variables that no one price fits. Don’t let this intimidate you, instead enjoy that this could be one area of your wedding planning process that you can really put your own unique stamp on things.
Wedding invitations, whether a priority or a thing to check off the list, are an important part of your overall wedding. Even when your goal is to spend as little as possible, keep in mind what they tell your guests and send something you’ll be proud of your years to come.
