When it comes to wedding invitations and etiquette, my philosophy has always been to educate the client, but let it up to them if they want to follow it or not. When it comes to things like today’s topic, I feel as a professional stationery designer, I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t try to educate my clients. At the same time, I also know I’m not here to tell them what they can or can’t do. That leads me today’s topic; putting “adults-only” on your wedding invitations.
Are you aware that proper wedding invitation etiquette says that you should never include any verbiage on your wedding invitation or enclosure cards about “adults-only”? That means that even cute sentences like “While we love children, this is an adult-only affair” are supposed to be left out. If you aren’t convinced, check out trusted sites like www.theknot.com, www.brides.com or www.weddingwire.com and see what they say. I have even written about this before.
While more and more couples are opting for an adults-only wedding, and guests are becoming more familiar with this practice, it still can be a touchy subject for some. While I haven’t found anyone that argues against having an adults-only or mostly adult ceremony and/or reception, the issue comes down to how you tell your guests that their children are not invited.
You are inviting guests to your special event; your wedding. It is your day to plan how you want but you want your invitations to be kind, polite and friendly. You want your guests to want to come to your wedding. Simply putting “adults-only” can come off as being cold especially for those that will have to find and pay for a sitter for the evening or weekend.
Whether you decide to include some kind of direct “adults-only” wording on your wedding invitations somewhere is entirely up to you. The important thing to do is understand proper etiquette and then decide for yourself what is best for you and your wedding.
