I’m back with the second “what not to do” for your wedding stationery in our series. Today it’s about the timing of when you should order and send both your save the dates and wedding invitations.
The industry standard time to mail out your wedding invitations is 6-8 weeks before your wedding. For some couples, they prefer a week or two sooner than even but most are comfortable with the standard timing. To ensure that your wedding invitations are done and ready in time to get them out about two months before your wedding, you should order them about 4-6 months before your big day. Depending on how custom you want to go with your wedding invitations, you may even need to order them before that.
When it comes to save the dates, you should plan on sending them out 6-8 months before your wedding. If you are planning a destination wedding, know the majority of your guests will be traveling or if you are getting married over a holiday weekend or big travel time, you should send them out upwards of a year in advance.
I’m seeing more and more this year, couples that are ordering their save the dates 2-3 months before their wedding. Often these couples are online orders so I don’t get the chance to find out what they are doing for wedding invitations. It also makes it hard to find out why they waited so long to send them out. It seems like a waste of money to send out save the dates 2-3 months before your wedding if your wedding invitations are getting mailed out 1.5 – 2 months out.
While a large percentage of couples chose to send save the dates as part of their wedding stationery, save the dates are still not considered a requirement for most weddings. I think we are reaching a point where they have become the norm, but they are not 100% necessary unless you are getting married over a holiday or your wedding requires your guests to travel.
If you wait too long to send save the dates, you aren’t really giving your guests any advance notice. With your wedding invitations so soon to follow, you really are only wasting money that you could have spent elsewhere. If you aren’t sure if or when to send your wedding stationery, ask a stationery professional to help you figure out the best times for you and your wedding.
